Word Play at the Southbank: New Songs for Early Years
WordPlay at the Southbank is a free event for families. Join me, Serafina Steer and Arji Manuelpillai as we bring you a new set of original songs for children, commissioned by the Southbank Centre.
The sessions are divided into 0-2 and 3-5, but there is crossover between the two and some families stay for both.
This project began as a commission for a portfolio of songs to be performed live over two years. Guided by child play expert Dr Jessica Pitt, and with workshops by Arji and his collaborator Matt Smith, I wrote the songs, while set designer Rosie Elnile designed a beautiful set based on comfort, attention and imagination.
After a live band came together, consisting of Arji, Serafina and I, the project began to grow again. We are now letting it develop, co-writing new songs, and enjoying the connection with the wonderful audiences of children and grown ups.
Do come and see us soon.
